SENATOR LINES doubles its capacity on the New Mediterranean Express Service NMX PDF Print E-mail

Written by Administrator

Only shortly after announcing its increased capacity on the Mediterranean Express Service MEX, SENATOR LINES will now also double its capacity on the New Mediterranean Express Service NMX as from the beginning of June. The first journey with the increased allocation of the Germany-based ocean carrier is the “YM Bamboo", leaving Shanghai on 6 June 2008 on its westbound voyage to the Mediterranean.

The full port rotation of the weekly NMX service is: Genoa, Livorno, Fos sur Mer, Port Said, Jeddah, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Ningbo, Xiamen, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Singapore, Port Said, Genoa.

“The doubling of our capacity on the MEX and now also on the NMX service complies with our intention to grow and to constantly increase our market share”, says Hans-Hermann Mohr, CEO of SENATOR LINES GmbH. “After the expanded volumes on the MEX service the upgrade of our NMX is the logical next step”, he adds. “Thereby, we can match the shipping allocation with the high demand and cargo volumes of our customers on all trade lanes between the Mediterranean, the Middle East and Northern China.”

Mark Ehlers, Director Operational Management at SENATOR LINES, explains: “The NMX as well as the MEX are services most in demand with our customers since they are directly interlinking the strong-growth markets of the Far East with the Mediterranean. The NMX features four calling ports in Northern China as well as a direct connection from China to the Italian port of Livorno. Thereby, SENATOR LINES can offer a wide range of direct port pairs.”

SENATOR LINES draws profit in 2007 PDF Print E-mail
(1 vote)
Written by Administrator

After a very difficult year 2006 in the shipping business with nearly all container shipping lines in the red, SENATOR LINES has boosted its profit and closed the 2007 business year with an operational result of 14 million USD profit. With the implementation of their restructuring programme “Concept 2007”, the Germany-based ocean carrier has moved back into positive figures and paved the ground for further profit.

Last year, SENATOR LINES has managed to improve the average load factor on nearly all of its 14 liner services. On the eastbound voyages the average utilisation of the Bremen-based company was up by 9%, whereas the high load factor of the previous years has been maintained on the westbound traffics.

“The positive development of our results and profit is due to our ‘Concept 2007’,” says Hans-Hermann Mohr, CEO of SENATOR LINES. “This restructuring, implemented by the end of a painful 2006 for all container lines, has enabled us to move back into positive figures”, he adds. “With our centralised lines management and the lean company structure, offering a fast and effective decision process, we can quickly react to new developments and trends.”

The restructuring has also contributed to maintain stable container-related expenses despite the remarkable general cost increase in the market.

“However, in 2008 the permanently rising bunker price is certainly a key factor for the container business results in general and the ones of SENATOR LINES in particular,” says Mark Ehlers, Director Operational Management at SENATOR LINES. “This scenario influences our forecasts for the year-end results 2008 significantly even though our first quarter figures have been very positive”, he adds.

Nevertheless, the Bremen-based container shipping line is confidently looking towards the future and intends to grow – despite the rising fuel costs and mixed prospects of the market. This development has been visible already in the significant capacity increase of the MEX and NMX services in April and May 2008 respectively.

“In the short term, SENATOR will be focusing on the stabilisation of the business and financial structure and maintaining its market position and business,” states Hans-Hermann Mohr. “Furthermore it will be our purpose to re-shape and adapt the structure to upcoming trends and to maintain our high service quality.”

In the mid and long term, SENATOR LINES aims towards growth, as Jens Philippi, Director Commercial Management, explains: “The focus will be laid on the expansion of competitive new niche lanes and businesses in order to achieve a better-balanced business portfolio. Potential ideas and projects are constantly being worked out within the Lines Management and are to be evaluated further. Of course each of these potential projects depends on further individual market development of the respective trade.”

The aim is to develop the specialised German shipping line from today’s one third Senator Lines niche business to a significantly higher percentage of own regional business during the next years.

Coast Guard honors APL for daring rescue at sea PDF Print E-mail

New York City, 12 Jun, 2008 - The Coast Guard today honored the master and crew of an APL containership for rescuing a family of four - including children ages 5 and 18 months - from a stricken yacht floundering in 15-foot Atlantic swells 1,700 miles off the U.S. East Coast the morning of June 9.

Capt. Parvez Guard received a shipboard commendation shortly after berthing the 906-foot APL Japan - renamed the Hyundai Japan while on long-term charter - at New York Container Terminal and releasing his grateful passengers for a return to their native Germany. "They were quite shaken up, but they were fine," said Capt. Guard, a 28-year veteran of APL, one of the world's leading container carriers.

The APL vessel arrived right on time after a harrowing rescue that took more than an hour to complete in 25-knot winds. According to the ship's master, the rescued family was in good condition and scheduled to meet with U.S. immigration officials before arranging its departure from New York.

The four were en route from Antigua in the West Indies to the Azores – a distance of about 2,500 miles - in their newly purchased 40-foot yacht, the Dally On. Caught in a nighttime gale June 8, the boat lost its rudder and mast and was trapped in heavy seas without the ability to maneuver.

At about 3:30 a.m. June 9, the APL vessel received a distress call from the Dally On, then about 10 nautical miles away. Capt. Guard mustered his entire crew to prepare for emergency operations and notified the stricken sailboat that help was on the way.

"They were in dire straits, so I said 'I'm coming,'" said the captain.

Little more than an hour after first radio contact, Capt. Guard navigated his massive containership alongside the Dally On. It took three tries, but the APL crew was finally able to lash the yacht to the stern of their vessel.

Thirty-seven-year-old crewmember Anthony Gomez-Stalin then scrambled down a pilot's ladder from the APL ship to the yacht. He snatched the 18-month-old infant in his arm and carried it up the ladder to safety. The other family members followed one-after-the-other until all four were aboard the APL vessel safe and unhurt.

According to Capt. Guard, Gomez-Stalin suffered a leg injury during his ascent with the infant but was back on duty the next day.
