April 16, 2008: “Multi-trade shipping line Safmarine is pleased to announce the appointment of Jonathan Horn as the new Africa Region Executive, effective May 1, 2008. Horn takes over the helm from Alan Jones, who will occupy a new role, that of Senior Key Account Executive for Safmarine’s South African based accounts, until his retirement in October 2009. Says Jones: “In view of Africa’s importance to Safmarine and our long-standing relationships with our customers in this region, we felt it opportune to adopt a phased approach to my eventual retirement at the end of next year - and after 33 years with Safmarine. “Phasing out my involvement in Africa to focus on South Africa will not only allow me to work closely with Jonathan - providing the necessary mentoring and development for a period of around 18 months - but we believe the handover period is also in the best interests of Safmarine’s customers.” Africa is one of Safmarine’s most important regions. “Safmarine is currently active in over 42 African countries and currently approximately 50% of all cargo transported by Safmarine connects to or from the continent,” said Horn, who joined Safmarine in 2004 as Regional Executive, Kwazulu Natal. He then moved to Cape Town as Human Resources Executive for Safmarine Pty Ltd before being appointed the Customer Services Executive for the Africa Region. Alan Jones, who joined Safmarine in February 1976, will also serve as a board member of Roadwing, a division of Safmarine Pty Ltd, until his retirement.
